Movement as the driver of development
What you may see
  • Bats at an object with increasing accuracy
  • Grasps using fingers rather than the whole fist
  • Releases an object deliberately

This is the graspable companion to the bell cylinder, and the difference matters. Where the cylinder rolls in a line, the open sphere goes wherever it is knocked, which makes it unpredictable in a way that holds a baby's attention for longer. The open frame is the important design feature: a baby who cannot yet wrap a whole hand around a ball can still hook a finger or two through the gaps and lift it.

At three to four months most of the work is batting rather than holding. The baby swipes, the ball moves, the bell sounds, and the swipe gets repeated with slightly more control. By five or six months the same object is being picked up, passed between hands, mouthed, dropped, and — the part parents remember — deliberately dropped again to watch what happens. That is not naughtiness; releasing an object on purpose is a separate motor skill from grasping it, and it has to be practised.

Because it rolls further than the cylinder, it earns its keep for longer. Many families find it becomes the main crawling motivator at seven or eight months, well after the mobiles have been packed away.

What to look for

  • An open lattice with gaps sized for small fingers
  • Natural wood with no coating that can be chewed off
  • Light enough to be lifted one-handed
  • A securely captured bell inside

Not this

Soft plastic balls with electronic sound. The sound should come from the object's movement, not from a speaker.

Safety

Check the internal bell fixing regularly and retire the ball if the frame cracks.
