Montessori principle
Control of error
What you may see
  • Sits without support
  • Looks for an object that has been hidden
  • Uses a developing pincer grasp

Somewhere in the second half of the first year a baby works out that things continue to exist when they cannot be seen. Before that, a ball that rolls under the sofa has simply ceased to be. After it, the baby looks under the sofa. The object permanence box gives that discovery a clean, repeatable demonstration: the ball goes into the hole, is gone for a beat, and rolls out into the tray.

What makes it a Montessori material rather than a toy is that it corrects the child rather than the adult correcting the child. If the ball is not lined up with the hole, it does not go in — no one has to say so. AMS calls this control of error, and it is the reason these materials build confidence: the feedback is immediate, impersonal, and comes from the work itself. A child can fail at this twenty times without being told once that they have failed.

Introduce it when the baby can sit unsupported, usually around eight months, and put it on a low shelf where they can choose it themselves. Expect obsessive repetition. Repetition is not boredom; it is a child consolidating something, and interrupting it — even to praise — tends to end the work cycle early.

What to look for

  • A ball too large to swallow, ideally 5cm or more
  • A tray that catches the ball rather than letting it roll away
  • Solid wood with a child-safe finish
  • One hole, one ball — extra shapes belong to a later material

Not this

Multi-function activity cubes that bundle this with five other tasks. Isolating one difficulty at a time is the whole method.

Safety

Measure the ball against a choking-hazard tester before first use, and re-check as sets sometimes ship with undersized spares.
