Two wooden rings joined at right angles — the classic first graspable object, shaped so a baby can catch it from almost any angle.

Montessori principle
The hand as the instrument of the mind
What you may see
  • Reaches deliberately for an object
  • Transfers an object from hand to hand
  • Brings objects to the mouth to investigate

Somewhere around three or four months, grasping stops being a reflex and starts being a decision. The baby sees something, wants it, and sends a hand towards it. Early attempts are wild — the hand overshoots, or arrives open and closes on nothing. Interlocking discs are designed around that clumsiness. Because two rings are joined at right angles, there is always an edge presenting itself at a catchable angle, whichever way the object has rolled.

They are also light enough to lift and small enough to bring to the mouth, which is where a baby of this age does most of their investigating. Mouthing is not a phase to be discouraged; it is how an infant gathers information about weight, texture, temperature and edge. Untreated beech gives them something worth investigating — it warms in the hand, it has grain, and it has a faint smell, none of which is true of moulded plastic.

The other thing this material quietly teaches is transferring an object from one hand to the other, a genuine motor milestone that shows up in this window. Offer the discs on the floor within easy reach during floor time rather than handing them over, so that the reaching itself is part of the work.

What to look for

  • Untreated or naturally oiled hardwood, no paint or lacquer
  • Rings thin enough for small fingers to close around
  • Smooth, splinter-free finish with no seams
  • Light weight — heavy is unusable at this age

Not this

Rattles with loose beads sealed in plastic. The baby shakes, the toy performs; nothing is learned about the object itself.

Safety

Check regularly for cracks or loosening at the joint. Anything that fits through a toilet-roll tube is a choking hazard.
