Grading a single variable
What you may see
  • Distinguishes between shades of one colour
  • Sustains a longer gaze without fussing
  • Begins to anticipate the mobile's movement

By around six weeks a baby is starting to distinguish colour, but not yet to distinguish between shades of the same colour. The Gobbi is built for that specific edge. It holds five spheres wrapped in embroidery thread, all the same hue, graded from the palest at one end to the deepest at the other, and hung so they descend on a diagonal with the darkest sphere lowest and nearest the baby.

That arrangement is not decorative. The darkest sphere is the easiest to see, so it is the one placed closest. As the baby's colour discrimination sharpens over the following weeks, the paler spheres progressively come into view, and the mobile effectively grows more detailed without changing at all. It is the same design logic that runs through the sensorial materials a child will meet years later in the pink tower and the colour tablets: hold everything constant except one quality, and let the child's own perception do the rest.

Offer it after interest in the Munari has faded, usually somewhere around six to ten weeks, and expect it to hold attention for a few weeks in turn. Blue, green and pink are the usual options and the choice makes no developmental difference — pick whichever reads most clearly against the wall behind it.

What to look for

  • A genuine gradation — five distinctly different values of one colour
  • Thread-wrapped spheres, which catch light differently from painted ones
  • A rod that lets the spheres hang on a proper diagonal
  • Matte finish rather than glossy plastic

Not this

Rainbow mobiles sold as 'Gobbi'. If the five spheres are five different colours, it is not grading anything and the whole point is lost.

Safety

Hang out of reach and take it down once the baby can grasp at it — wrapped thread is a strangulation and ingestion hazard in reaching hands.
