Egg and Cup

A wooden egg and a matching cup. That is the whole material, and the constraint is the point.

What you may see
  • Places one object into another
  • Rotates an object to fit an opening
  • Uses both hands cooperatively

An egg and a cup look almost too simple to bother with, which is exactly why they work. Placing the egg into the cup requires the baby to hold one object, orient it, judge where the opening is, and let go at the right moment. Each of those is a separate skill, and bundling them into a single two-piece material means nothing else is competing for attention while they are practised.

The egg shape is doing something specific. Unlike a ball, it has an axis, so it will only settle into the cup one way round. The baby who jams it in sideways gets resistance and has to rotate it — early spatial reasoning, arrived at through the hands rather than through instruction. And unlike a ball, it does not roll away the moment it is set down, so the work stays put.

Offer it on a small tray so the material has a defined home, and show it once, slowly, without narrating. Montessori presentations are deliberately quiet: the adult's hands demonstrate and the adult's mouth stays shut, because a child watching hands and listening to speech at the same time is splitting attention between two channels.

What to look for

  • An egg that fits the cup with a little clearance, not tightly
  • Unfinished or naturally oiled wood
  • A cup with a base wide enough not to tip constantly
  • A tray to define the work

Not this

Sets that add five shapes and five holes. That is a shape sorter, it comes later, and offering it now just produces frustration.

Safety

Confirm the egg is above choking size and check for cracks where the grain runs thin.
