What you may see
  • Sits down and stands up from a chair unaided
  • Sits through a whole meal by choice
  • Carries their own plate to and from the table

A high chair is a restraint. That is not a criticism of anyone using one, but it is worth being clear about what it does: the child is lifted in, strapped, and cannot leave until an adult decides. The weaning table inverts all of that. It sits low enough that a toddler can walk up, sit down, eat, and get up and walk away under their own power.

The sizing is the whole thing, and it is where most purchases go wrong. When the child sits, their feet should be flat on the floor and their knees at roughly ninety degrees, with the table at about elbow height. Feet planted on the floor give the trunk stability, and a stable trunk is what makes controlled hand movement possible — which is why a child often eats more tidily at a properly sized table than strapped into a seat with their legs dangling.

It does more than meals. It rapidly becomes the place where the pouring work happens, where the crayons come out, and where a puzzle gets done. Having one surface in the house that belongs to the child, at their scale, changes how much of the day they can direct themselves.

What to look for

  • Feet flat on the floor when seated — measure your child first
  • Adjustable height, since this stage lasts a couple of years
  • Solid wood that will not tip when leaned on
  • A wipeable finish

Not this

Buying a size up to 'grow into'. If their feet dangle, the postural benefit is gone and so is most of the point.

Safety

Check the chair does not tip when a child leans back or climbs on the seat edge.
