Dressing Frames

A button, a zip and a snap, each mounted alone in its own frame so it can be practised away from the pressure of getting dressed.

Montessori principle
Isolation of difficulty
What you may see
  • Pushes a button through a hole
  • Starts and pulls a zip
  • Attempts to dress without help

Learning to do up a button while wearing the coat is genuinely hard. The fastening is upside down from the child's viewpoint, the fabric moves, and there is usually someone waiting by the door. Dressing frames take the fastener off the body and mount it flat, right way up, with nothing else going on. Same skill, none of the interference.

The sequence matters. Large buttons come first because the target is big and the motion is slow. Zips follow, because a zip is a single continuous pull once it is started, though starting it is fiddly. Snaps need more force than most eighteen-month-olds have, and buckles and laces belong well into the third year. Offering them in difficulty order means each frame is achievable, and a child who succeeds at the button will choose the zip.

What this buys is not really buttoning. It is the child who can dress themselves, and everything that follows from that — leaving the house without a fight, a morning routine that belongs to them. Montessori calls the goal independence, and this is one of the most direct routes to it available in the second year.

What to look for

  • Large buttons on a first frame — 2cm or more
  • Fabric that holds its shape rather than bunching
  • A frame small enough for a child to carry
  • Solid wood construction

Not this

Twelve-frame sets bought at once. Two or three frames at the child's current level beats a full set they cannot access.

Safety

Check buttons are stitched on securely; loose buttons are a choking hazard.
