Montessori principle
Grading by size
What you may see
  • Places rings onto a vertical post
  • Begins to select rings by size
  • Persists through several attempts

A one-year-old meeting stacking rings will put them on in whatever order they come to hand, and that is the correct starting point. What the material offers is a slow-burning invitation to notice that the rings are not the same, and that there is an order which produces a smooth cone and orders which produce a lumpy one. Nobody has to point this out. Over weeks, the child starts sorting before they stack.

That move — from placing to ordering — is the beginning of grading, and grading runs all the way up through the Montessori sensorial materials to the pink tower and the brown stair, and from there into mathematics. Putting five rings in size order is a small act of the same kind as arranging ten cubes by volume.

For a first stacker, choose a straight vertical dowel rather than a curved or rocking one. A curved post adds a second problem (angling the ring) on top of the one being learned (choosing the right ring), and at twelve months that combination usually ends in the whole thing being thrown. The rocking base is a good extension later.

What to look for

  • A straight vertical dowel for a first set
  • Clearly graded ring sizes with visible differences
  • A weighted base that stays put when knocked
  • Smooth wood, water-based finish if painted

Not this

Sets where all rings are the same size, which are sold as stackers but teach no grading at all.

Safety

Check the dowel is firmly seated in the base — a loose post is a poke hazard when a child falls onto it.
