Learning through the senses
What you may see
  • Traces a letter shape with a finger
  • Associates a sound with a symbol
  • Identifies the first sound in a spoken word

A child tracing a sandpaper letter is using three senses at once. The fingertips follow the rough shape, the eyes watch the path, and the voice says the sound. Muscle memory of the letter's form is being laid down at the same moment as its sound, which is why children who learn this way often begin writing letters before they can read them.

The critical detail is that you say the sound, not the letter's name. Trace and say 'mmm', not 'em'. Letter names are an obstacle to early reading — a child who knows 'see-ay-tee' has no route to 'cat', whereas one who knows 'c-a-t' as sounds can blend them. Consonants are mounted on pink boards and vowels on blue, so the distinction is visible before it is ever explained.

Trace with two fingers, always in the direction the letter is written, and offer two or three letters at a time rather than the whole alphabet. Start with sounds that appear in the child's own name and with letters that look and sound distinctly different — introducing b and d together at the start reliably causes confusion that takes months to undo.

What to look for

  • Genuinely rough surface with a smooth board around it
  • Pink consonant and blue vowel boards
  • Consistent letterform, cursive or print — pick one and stay with it
  • A storage box

Not this

Alphabet songs and letter-name charts alongside this work. Mixing names and sounds is the main cause of stalled early reading.

Safety

Nothing significant, though check the sandpaper is bonded well and not shedding grit.
