Balance Bike

No pedals, no stabilisers — feet on the ground, so the child learns balance first and everything else follows.

What you may see
  • Balances briefly on one foot
  • Glides with both feet off the ground
  • Steers deliberately around an obstacle

Balance, not pedalling, is the hard part of riding a bike. Stabilisers solve the easy problem and postpone the hard one, which is why children who learn on them often need a second, harder transition later. A balance bike removes the pedals so that the child's feet stay available, and lets them work on the actual difficulty from the first day.

The progression happens on its own and it is satisfying to watch. Week one is walking while sitting on the saddle. Then longer strides. Then a push and a brief glide with both feet lifted, which is the moment balance is genuinely being held. By the end most children are gliding for long distances, steering into turns, and leaning through corners without anyone having explained leaning.

Sizing is the one thing to get right. Standing over the saddle, the child should have both feet flat on the ground with a slight bend in the knee. Too high and they cannot push off confidently; too low and they run out of leg. Weight matters as well — anything much over about 30% of the child's body weight becomes unmanageable, and this is where heavy wooden frames can be a poorer choice than they look.

What to look for

  • Standover height letting both feet sit flat on the ground
  • Light frame — check the actual weight, not the claim
  • Adjustable seat post
  • Puncture-proof or air tyres depending on your surfaces

Not this

Tricycles and stabilisers, which teach pedalling before balance and usually have to be unlearned.

Safety

A correctly fitted helmet from the very first ride, and keep early sessions away from traffic and slopes.
