By 24-27 months, toddlers are ready for puzzles with more pieces and greater complexity. Move from peg puzzles to interlocking puzzles with 4-8 pieces. Scene puzzles that create a recognizable image when complete are particularly satisfying at this age.
Puzzles at this stage build multiple cognitive skills: visual discrimination (noticing differences between similar pieces), spatial reasoning (rotating and flipping pieces), memory (remembering where pieces go), and sequential thinking (developing a strategy for completion).
Introduce puzzles gradually — start with 4-piece puzzles and increase complexity as your toddler masters each level. Floor puzzles with large pieces work well for this age. Puzzles featuring favorite characters, animals, or vehicles add motivation. The satisfaction of completing a puzzle independently is a powerful confidence builder.
