Balance bikes are one of the most effective tools for teaching toddlers the skills they'll need to ride a bicycle. Unlike training wheels, balance bikes teach the hardest part first — balancing — by letting toddlers glide with their feet on or near the ground.
At 30-33 months, toddlers have the coordination and confidence to begin balance biking. They start by walking while sitting on the bike, progress to gliding, and eventually lift their feet for extended coasting. This progression happens naturally at the child's own pace.
Look for lightweight balance bikes with adjustable seat heights, air or foam tires, and a low step-through frame. The bike should be light enough for your toddler to pick up if it tips. Children who learn on balance bikes typically transition to pedal bikes without training wheels much earlier and more easily.
