Building blocks introduce spatial reasoning and fine motor skills to babies approaching their first birthday. At 9-12 months, babies can grasp blocks, bang them together, and may start stacking two blocks — though knocking towers down remains the favorite activity.
Soft blocks are ideal for this age — they're safe to mouth, easy to grip, and won't hurt when thrown. Look for sets with different textures, colors, numbers, or pictures that add sensory and educational value beyond basic stacking.
Block play teaches concepts like gravity, balance, and spatial relationships. It also builds hand-eye coordination and bilateral coordination (using both hands together). As babies transition into toddlerhood, blocks become a staple toy that grows with their abilities for years to come.
